In the 2025 Fiscal Year, the PIH Malawi managed $250,000 for Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) medicines, achieving an impressive 97% average fill rate at PIH-supported facilities in Neno. 

Through our 30+ years of partnering with governments, PIH developed The 5 S’s to strengthen public health systems and move the world closer to free, universal health care for everyone, everywhere including Malawi.

On 12th July 2024, PIH Malawi handed over the three ambulances and scholarships to Malawi government through the District Health Office in the district, reaffirming PIH Malawi’s commitment to supporting the government’s efforts in strengthening health systems.

Cholera is an extremely virulent disease that can cause severe diarrhea and vomiting and can be fatal if left untreated. Neno District, one of the hard-hit areas, has mounted a strong emergency response, including setting up a cholera treatment center at Lisungwi Community Hospital with the collaboration of PIH Malawi, Ministry of Health and others.

PIH Malawi receives an award from NGORA and the Ministry of Gender for “significant investment in a hard-to-reach-area,” reaffirming PIH’s mission to create a preferential option for the poor in health care by accompanying the public sector and strengthening the provision of essential health services.  

Mental health activities at PIH Malawi started in 2007 focusing on treatment of psychiatric patients identified at the out-patient services, in-patient services, and in the outreach clinics. Mental health clinics at Neno District Hospital and Lisungwi Community Hospital provided support to patients with severe mental health conditions and epilepsy. 

Isaac Mphande—Nurse Lead & Education Manager at Partners In Health (PIH) Malawi receives a one-year PIH Global Nurse Executive Fellowship—a program launched in 2017 to equip nursing and midwifery leaders at PIH’s clinical sites with the knowledge and skills to respond to global health challenges and transform health systems, from the ground up.

Residents of Malawi have experienced a difficult nine months due to cyclones and storms that caused a cholera outbreak. In response to this, PIH Malawi completed a large-scale oral cholera vaccination campaign in the badly affected Neno district. Officials reported that the storms affected over 221,000 households and 945,000 individuals across the country, with more than 7,500 homes destroyed in Neno District.
